2016: Amanda Martin, MD
Amanda Martin received her acceptance to the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2013. Upon acceptance, she made the decision to begin teaching herself how to get healthy, in order to be the best example she could be to her future patients.
Admitting at that time, that soda pop was her “only liquid”, she began her journey with videos such as Vegucated and Forks Over Knives. These films inspired her to read books by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, MD, and to begin a search of the medical literature related to optimal nutrition. Shocked at all she uncovered, at least she found solace in the upcoming start of medical school, where she would surely learn more about preventive nutrition and how to apply it to her patients. Summed up in her own one word, “WRONG.”
In that first year of medical school, the term ‘vegan’ was mentioned 6 times, and only in terms of the need to monitor a patient for deficiencies. By 2015, Amanda decided to “set out to change our medical school.” She emailed hundreds of other students (with only one response – from Brittany Van Houten), who began working together to start a formal Interest Group for Plant Based Nutrition. She held meetings with WSU professors and officials, but it didn’t always go as one might expect. Enduring scrutiny, comments like ‘conspiracy theorist’, and further commentary on the merits of meat and cheese for questioning industry-sponsored slide shows, 1st year Medical Student Amanda pressed on.
She spoke with Dr. Joel Kahn, contacted Dr. Hans Diehl at the CHIP Program and Dr. Neal Barnard at PCRM, and became involved with the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group. Together with Brittany Van Houten, Jason Van Houten, Naila Kovacevic, and Angie Sullivan, a joint MSU/WSU team was formed to submit a project on PBN to the American Medical Association.
In 2016, 18 students hailing from Wayne State University, University of Michigan, Oakland University, Michigan State University, and Central Michigan University, represented 6 different programs. Students working on degrees in MD/ Medical School, DO/ Osteopathic Medicine, RD/ Dietetics and Nutrition, MPH/ Public Health, and PhD/ Psychiatry worked to review thousands of scientific studies. Amanda helped organize teams to summarize, edit, and locate case studies for each of the systems of the body. Jamie Qualls, and Ivana Marchlewicz, were very instrumental in coordinating six in-person meetings between January and September 2016, several Group Chat/Email/Skype/Conference Calls, and the Faculty assistants and review by six national content experts.
Over 35 drafts culminated in the world’s first multi-university, interdisciplinary plant based nutrition in medicine curriculum, to be made available for use in medical, dental, public health, nutrition, dietetics, and nursing programs nationwide by the end of 2016.
This remarkable team of students – while in medical and graduate school – has developed course material to help future students, teachers, and patients, impacting an exponential number of individuals and families they’ll never even meet.
You can find out more about Dr. Amanda Martin’s work now at the Henry Ford Health System Psychiatry Department.
